A Brief History of OCSMRM
1989.8, 1st China night dinner during 8th SMRM in Amsterdam, Holland, with 12 Chinese attendees at an Indonesian-Chinese restaurant shaped like a boat sitting in the bank of a cannel.1991 - Gary Shen organized the group of Chinese MRI scholars/students at the ISMRM, started the formal organization, and help annual gathering and dinner at each ISMRM annual meetings.
1992.8 – Gary Shen and Shi-Jiang Li organized a dinner gathering, sponsored by 安科.
1994.6, Gary Shen was sealing envelopes, jotting down the address by hands, and placing stamps (29 cents back then with his personal money) to be sent to the members. From 1991 to 2000, Gary Shen served as the President for the not-so-formalized “society” who did not have an official name.
2000.5 – 8th ISMRM, Denver, Colorado: Election of second group of leadership for the society was held. President: Jianhui Zhong, Registrar: Qing Yang.
From 2000 to 2003, Jianhui Zhong served as the second President for the organization or the first President under a formalized name - Chinese Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (CSMRM). He led the effort in establishing the first By-Laws of the society. A website was also set up with the help from a student of Zhipei Lang’s group. Under his leadership, the Society grew immensely, as evidenced by the need for ever increasing room size to hold annual gathering during the term of his presidency.
2001.1.02. The Chinese Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine was incorporated as a domestic nonprofit corporation in the County of Dauphin, Pennsylvania State, with Entity No.2980743, and was registered at 104 Robin Road, Hershey, PA 17033 by Qing X. Yang.
2001.5 – 9th ISMRM, Glasgow, Scotland. The group had a small gathering at the meeting, then dinner at a very expensive and bad Chinese restaurant.
2002.5 – Honolulu Hawaii: A gathering at the 10th ISMRM to (1) present informal talks about MRI activities inside China and in industry; (2) elect the next president. Jia-Hong Gao was elected as the next President and Xiaoping Hu was Vice-President/President-Elect. It was decided that the president would serve for 2 years and president-elect will be elected every2 years. Over 100 attendees for the gathering and Chinese dinner.
2003.5 – 11th ISMRM in Toronto, Canada, Jia-Hong Gao began his second year as President.
2004.5 – 12th ISMRM in Kyoto, Japan, Xiaoping Hu started his first-year of Presidency. Debiao Li was elected as Vice-President/President-Elect.
2005.5 – 13th ISMRM in Miami Beach, FL, Xiaoping Hu started his 2nd year as President.
2006.5 – 14th ISMRM in Seattle, Washington, Debiao Li began his term as President. Qun Chen was elected Vice-President/President-Elect.
A five-member executive committee including current president (Debiao Li), vice- president/president-elect (Qun Chen), immediate past president (Xiaoping Hu), treasurer/secretary (Xiaohong Joe Zhou), and an at-large member (Zhi-Pei Liang) was formed to run the society.
Because the official name of the society (Chinese Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine) has been used by 中国放射学会磁共振学会, to avoid conflict and more accurately define the membership demographics of the society, the executive committee decided to change the name of the society to “Overseas Chinese Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (OCSMRM). OCSMRM continues to welcome and include colleagues from China to become members and participate in its activities.
A survey was conducted on membership demographics and ideas for future activities. A new website was developed where society information and activities were posted.
2007.5 – 15th ISMRM in Berlin, the first official dinner gathering was organized by Debiao Li and Qun Chen. More than 300 people attended. The dinner was sponsored by Siemens MINDIT. In addition to dinner, a formal program was presented. Debiao Li summarized the activities in the past year and plans for the next year. Vivian Lee (ISMRM President) addressed the gathering. Cheng Zhou gave a short speech representing 中国放射学会和磁共振学会。Xiaoping Hu gave a lecture on preparing manuscript; James Meng, Xiaohong Joe Zhou, and Chun Yuan discussed career tracks in industry, medical physics, and academia, respectively. Shi-Jiang Li and Yi Wang provided advice on NIH grant applications and review.
2007.8 – Dalian. The idea of holding an OCSMRM scientific meeting was initiated by Xiaoping Hu who led the effort in organizing the first joint OCSMRM/CSMRM meeting together with Debiao Li, Xiaohong Joe Zhou, Jianlin Wu and Ji Qi. The Meeting was preceded by an ISMRM Global Outreach Workshop organized by Debiao Li and Xiaoping Hu. Jianlin Wu served as the local host. There were more than 200 attendees from Overseas and China. It was the first official joint meeting between Overseas Chinese MR scholars and colleagues from China. There were 40 invited presentations and 80 proffered papers.
2008.5 – 16th ISMRM in Toronto, Qun Chen began his term as President. Xiaohong Joe Zhou was elected as Vice-President/President Elect.
2008.12 – Shenzhen. The Second Joint OCSMRM/CSMRM Meeting was held, together with the ESMRMB workshop.
2009.5 – 17th ISMRM in Honolulu, Hawaii. A beach party was organized by Qun Chen. Chinese dinner was ordered. It was designed as a social party for the members to socialize. Professional dancing and tutoring were provided.
2010.5 – 18th ISMRM in Stockholm Sweden, An official OCSMRM dinner was organized by Qun Chen with more than 300 attendees. Xiaohong Joe Zhou began his presidency, Yi Wang was elected as Vice-President/President Elect.
2010.8 – Shanghai. The Third Joint OCSMRM/CSMRM Meeting was held, together with the ESMRMB workshop. The organizing committee included Xiaohong Joe Zhou (Chair), Xiaoping Hu, Debiao Li, Qun Chen, Bin Zhao, and Jürgen Hennig. The term of the President was changed from 2 years to 1 year.
2011.5 – 19th ISMRM in Montreal Canada. An official OCSMRM dinner was organized by Xiaohong Joe Zhou. Yi Wang began his term as President. Chun Yan was elected as Vice-President/President-Elect.
2011.8 – Beijing. A joint meeting of ISMRM and CSR/OCSMRM was organized by Debiao Li and Quncheng Li. More than 800 people attended.
2012.5 – 20st ISMRM in Melbourne, Australia. The OCSMRM Annual Gathering was organized by Yi Wang. Chun Yuan began the term as President. Yihong Yang was elected as Vice President, Yiping Du was elected as Treasurer, Wei Chen was elected as Secretary.
2012.12.14-16 – Xiamen, OCSMRM Annual Scientific Conference was organized by Chun Yuan.
2013.4 – 21st ISMRM in Salt Lake City, USA. The OCSMRM Annual Gathering was organized by Chun Yuan. Yihong Yang began the term as President.
2013. 6 – Hangzhou, the joint CSMRM-OCSMRM annual conference was organized by Guangming Lu/Minming Zhang (CSMRM) and Yihong Yang (OCSMRM).
2014.5 – 22nd ISMRM in Milan, Italy. OCSMRM-CSMRM2014 Joint Professional Meeting “China Night” was organized by Yihong Yang. Yiping Du began the term as President. Ed Wu was elected as the Secretary.
2014.6 –Changsha, a joint CSMRM-OCSMRM annual conference was organized by Guangming Lu (CSMRM) and Yiping Du (OCSMRM).
2015.5 – 23rd ISMRM in Toronto, Canada. The Annual OCSMRM Meeting “China Night” was organized by Yihong Yang. Wei Chen began the term as President. Xiaoliang Zhang was elected as the Secretary.
2015.6 –Wuhan, a joint CSMRM-OCSMRM annual conference was organized by Jingliang Cheng (CSMRM) and Wei Chen (OCSMRM).
2016.5 – 24th ISMRM in Singapore. The Annual OCSMRM Meeting “China Night” is organized by Wei Chen and will be held in the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Center on May 11, 2016, new OCSMRM Secretary and two BOT members have been elected.
2017.5 – Hawaii Convention Center, USA, April 25, 2017, 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Dr. Ed Wu, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Hongkong University, was the President of OCSMRM 2017, and organized the annual meeting. Dr. Wu summarized major activities of OCSMRM, and announced election of OCSMRM BOT and Secretary. OCSMRM honorary lifetime member award was setup during this year’s annual meeting. Winners of young investigator awards (YIAs) were selected and announced during the OCSMRM 2017 annual meeting.
2018.6 - Paris, France, June 10, 2018, 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Dr. Xiaoliang Zhang, Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, University of California, San Francisco, was the President of OCSMRM 2018, and organized the annual meeting. Dr. Zhang summarized major activities of OCSMRM, and announced election of OCSMRM BOT and Secretary. Winners of young investigator awards (YIAs) were selected and announced during the OCSMRM 2018 annual meeting.
2019.5 - Hotel Intercontinental Montreal, Montreal, Canada, May 15, 2019, 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Dr. Qiyong Gong, Professor of Radiology, Huaxi Hospital, was the President of OCSMRM 2019, and organized the annual meeting. Dr. Gong summarized major activities of OCSMRM, and announced election of OCSMRM BOT and Secretary. Dr. Bharat B. Biswal gave a Roentgen Lecture on “Application of resting state fMRI in psycho-radiology”. Winners of young investigator awards (YIAs) were selected and announced during the OCSMRM 2018 annual meeting. Career development forum was introduced to OCSMRM annual meeting on May 13, 7:00-9:30 pm, at Hotel Intercontinental Montreal.
2020.7 - Virtual meeting due to COVID-19 was held on July 29, 2020, 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Dr. Jiang Du, Professor of Radiology, University of California, San Diego, was the President of OCSMRM 2020, and organized the annual meeting. Dr. Du summarized major activities of OCSMRM. Dr. Danny JJ Wang, Professor of Southern California, announced OCSMRM young investigator awards (YIAs). Dr. Hanzhang Lu, Professor of Radiology, Johns Hopkins University, announced OCSMRM BOT and Secretary election results. Dr. Jiang Du gave a lecture on “Ultrashort Echo Time Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Technical Development and Clinical Applications”. Dr. Meiyun Wang, Professor of Radiology, People’s Hospital of Henan Province, summarized plans for OCSMRM 2021.
2021.7 – Virtual meeting due to COVID-19. Dr. Meiyun Wang was the President of the OCSMRM 2021. Dr. Wang summarized major activities of the OCSMRM. Dr. Hui Han, Chair of the YIA competition, announced winners.
2021.9-2022.3. Four webinars were held on the following topics, brain MRI, molecular imaging, trainee presentations, and MR engineering. The webinars were well attended. It was planned that such webinars will be organized on a regular basis.
